Che Diaz and Miranda Hobbes have been a divisive pairing on And Just Like That…, but Cynthia Nixon is a fan of the new direction for her character. And for the fans who are saying Steve deserves better treatment, Nixon has some insight for them too.

In the reboot’s premiere season, Miranda has been caught up in a whirlwind affair with Che Diaz, a non-binary comedian and Carrie’s podcast boss. While Miranda seems more than confident in her decision, the relationship has been subject to fan backlash after the character cheated on her husband Steve to be with Che. Following Steve’s distraught plea to save his and Miranda’s marriage in the January 20 episode, many AJLT fans called for justice for Steve and questioned Miranda’s motivations.

But on a Thursday, January 27 appearance on Watch What Happens Live, Nixon said she understands the fans concerns…but hinted that there may be more under the surface to Steve and Miranda’s relationship.

“I have to say that that’s the thing about breakups,” Nixon told host Andy Cohen. “You know, oftentimes there is one person that is making the breakup happen and the other person who is reluctant. But I have to say, that person who is reluctant is pretty miserable too and they’re just not admitting it.”
